A dispute has broken out between Poland and Russia over the eviction of a school attached to the Russian embassy in Warsaw. The takeover of the building by bailiffs is taking place at the request of the City of Warsaw in full agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry’s spokesperson announced in Warsaw on Saturday. A court previously ruled that the Polish state owned the school building, which had been illegally used by the Russian embassy for years. The Russian Foreign Ministry has criticized the evictions as “appropriation” and threatened a harsh response.
According to Polish media reports, it is a secondary school attended by children of Russian diplomats. As broadcaster TVP reported, police officers appeared in front of the building on Saturday morning.
Moscow is critical
The Polish Foreign Ministry had already called for the building to be evacuated in March and referred to the court’s ruling. According to media reports, the property was nationalized in 1945 and handed over to the Soviet Union.
Moscow strongly criticized the approach. “We consider these further hostile actions by the Polish authorities to be a flagrant violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and an attack on Russian diplomatic properties in Poland,” the ministry said in a statement. Such a brutal offense will not go unanswered. (SDA)
