For more than a year, Russia has been attacking Ukraine with artillery, missiles and drones. But it is also becoming increasingly clear that the war has long since reached Russian soil. Ukraine is starting to hit back.

As data analyzes by the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” show, Ukraine’s attacks on Russia have increased in recent weeks and months. The Russian Ministry of Defense speaks of “terror”, Ukraine is silent – responsibility is rarely accepted.

Ukrainian attacks on Russia are on the rise

Already at the beginning of the war, the Ukrainian army attacked Russian fuel and ammunition depots. At the end of 2022, several Russian airbases were attacked, including Engels airfield. And only last week there was another attack on Sevastopol. Located on the Crimean peninsula, illegally annexed by Russia in 2014, the city is home to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. Shortly before, a Ukrainian drone exploded near Moscow.

The list of Ukrainian targets in Russia is getting longer. And they show that the impacts are getting closer and closer to the Russian capital Moscow. Ukraine even attempted a kamikaze drone attack on the Kremlin, the seat of Russian President Vladimir Putin (70), on Sunday, according to “Bild”. However, this failed.

Russians get nervous – parades cancelled

The Russians are becoming increasingly nervous about the increasing attacks on Russian soil. The end of World War II is traditionally celebrated on May 8 and 9. This year, however, the victory parades will be fewer. In Belgorod, near the Ukrainian border, the parade was called off for fear of further Ukrainian attacks. The governor justified this by saying “not wanting to provoke the enemy with a large amount of accumulated equipment and soldiers in the center of Belgorod”.

These parades were also canceled in other areas, for example in the neighboring area of Kursk. Kursk justified the cancellation of the parade with the “current situation”, Crimea and the city of Sevastopol with “security concerns”.

Even if many of the (alleged) Ukrainian attempts to attack Russia with drones fail, or have little success, they clearly show that even Russia, which likes to present itself as invincible, has its weaknesses. And Ukraine is doing everything it can to find them. In the course of the counter-offensive, which will start shortly, more attacks may occur.
