Brazil’s ex-president Bolsonaro testifies about storming congress

According to the media, the former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, testified to the federal police early this year about the storm of radical supporters on the government district in the capital Brasília. According to his lawyer, Bolsonaro has answered all questions and condemned the January 8 riots, the Brazilian news agency Agência Brasil reported on Wednesday. Bolsonaro’s defense said the release of a video in which he questioned the legality of Brazil’s presidential election in October was “coincidental”.

The right-wing populist politician is accused of calling for a crime. The Supreme Court has opened an investigation at the request of the Public Prosecution Service. Even though the post came after the riots, Bolsonaro’s role needs to be investigated. The Supreme Court is also investigating “intellectual authorship” that led to the violence and vandalism in Brasília.

On January 8, a few days after his successor, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, took office, Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the seat of government and the Supreme Court in Brasília, wreaking havoc. It took security forces hours to regain control of the situation. Lula accused Bolsonaro of goading his supporters. The former president denied the allegations. Bolsonaro was in the United States during the storming of the government district. (sda/dpa)
