The American entertainment giant Disney has sued Florida governor Ron DeSantis (44) in the dispute over the Disney World theme park. In the lawsuit filed in federal court on Wednesday, Disney accuses the arch-conservative politician of leading a “targeted retaliatory campaign” against the company. The Republican wants to “punish” Disney for expressing a “political position” that some government officials dislike.
The retaliation by the governor, who is being treated as a potential Republican presidential nominee, threatens Disney’s business and violates freedom of speech enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, Disney said. The company has to go to court to protect employees, guests and partners of the theme park.
DeSantis threatens to build a prison
Disney and DeSantis have had a bitter dispute over the past year, which is now escalating. The entertainment group had criticized a bill pushed by the governor that would ban teaching kindergartens and the first three years of elementary school about sexual orientation and gender identity.
Critics have denounced the law as anti-LGBTQ, calling it the “Don’t Say Gay” law. The then Disney boss Bob Chapek (63) also criticized the law and stopped all political donations from his company in Florida.
DeSantis reacted angrily to Disney’s criticism — and passed a law that severely limited Disney World’s self-governing status. Recently, the governor threatened to build another theme park or even a prison near Disney World in Orlando.
DeSantis is on a hard right course in Florida and was re-elected governor last fall in a landslide victory. The 44-year-old is considered the most promising rival of former President Donald Trump (76) in the race for the Republican presidential nomination for the 2024 election.
