Chinese head of state and party leader Xi Jinping (69) had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45). Selensky announced this in Kiev. Chinese state media also reported this on Wednesday.
It is Xi Jinping’s first face-to-face conversation with Zelenskiy since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine more than a year ago. In the conflict, China supports Russian President Vladimir Putin, which has brought Beijing much international criticism.
Xi calls for negotiations
“I had a long and important phone conversation with President Xi Jinping,” Zelensky tweeted. The 45-year-old hopes that this contact will give bilateral relations a “strong boost”. Kiev had expected this call weeks ago, right after Xi’s visit to Moscow.
China’s state television said Xi spoke out in favor of “talks and negotiations” during the exchange. These are “the only way out of the war”. Xi promised Zelensky to send a special delegation to Ukraine.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying (53) published some details of the call on Twitter. “China is consistently and unequivocally ready to expand bilateral relations with Ukraine,” she wrote. China is always on the side of peace. China did not cause the “Ukraine crisis” nor is it a party to the conflict. (nad/SDA)
