Because of the suspicion of planning an attack with an Islamic background Police arrested a 28-year-old Syrian man in Hamburg, northern Germany, on Tuesday. His brother, who is four years younger than him and lives in Kempten in southern Germany, is said to have helped with the planning.
This has been announced by the Federal Criminal Investigation Department, the Criminal Investigation Department and the Hamburg public prosecutor’s office. According to the information, the two brothers planned an attack on civilian targets with a homemade explosive belt. The 28-year-old is the prime suspect. For several weeks he had purchased raw materials for the production of explosive material via the online platform Ebay and other suppliers. His brother in Kempten encouraged him to plan the crime.
An arrest warrant from the Hamburg court had already been issued against the 28-year-old for terrorism financing. On Tuesday morning, several objects in Hamburg and Kempten were searched. Extensive evidence, including chemicals, had been secured. 250 police officers were involved in the operation. (oee/sda/dpa)
