At a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on Monday, all eyes were once again on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (73). As usual, the Kremlin official in his speech accused the West of hegemonic intentions and defended Russian President Vladimir Putin’s (70) invasion of Ukraine.
However, Lavrov caused a stir with a statement, “Focus” reports. Accordingly, the world has become “possibly even more dangerous” than during the Cold War. According to him, a “dangerous line” has been approached.
Lavrov accused the West of wanting to change the UN Charter
We need to rethink how international relations should take shape in the future. “By building a solid consensus based on a balance of interests, or by pushing Washington’s supremacy aggressively and erratically,” Lavrov said.
Russia had planned the meeting of the UN body given its presidency of the Council. The session entitled “Effective Multilateralism by Defending the Principles of the Charter of the United Nations” was seen as a provocation by many members. The Kremlin, on the other hand, complained that Russian journalists were not given visas to accompany Lavrov to the US.
In addition, Lavrov accused Western countries of wanting to replace the UN Charter as the basis of the international order with their own rules. Among other things, he denounced the expansion of military cooperation in the Pacific. This is only to deter China and isolate Russia.
“It’s Cynical”
In the West, Lavrov was widely criticized for his performance. “By planning this debate, Russia is trying to portray itself as a defender of the UN Charter and multilateralism. Nothing is less true. UN Secretary-General António Guterres (73) then again described the Russian invasion of Ukraine as “in violation of international law”. The war in Ukraine has brought “enormous suffering and devastation to the country,” Guterres said Monday in the presence of Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.
In a sense, Guterres agreed with Lavrov’s statement about the “dangerous line”. Guterres also complained that “the multilateral system” is currently under more strain than at any time since the UN was founded in 1945. Tensions between the “great powers” had “reached their highest point”. (dzc/AFP)
