334,233,854 people live in the US. In the eyes of the Democrats, apparently none of them is better suited to run the huge country than 80-year-old Joe Biden. Today, Tuesday, the Democrats will release a taped video message from the incumbent US president. Hardly anyone in Washington doubts that Biden will announce his renewed candidacy for the most powerful office in the world.

Four years ago today, Biden threw his hat in the ring. At the time to get the Republican incumbent Donald Trump (76) to the ground. According to the tenor of the Democrats, none other than the veteran political warhorse Biden has what it takes to stop the threat from Trump. Democratic voters marched to the polls more gritted than clapped — in record numbers, after all. Trump had to go.

Half of Democrats want nothing more to do with Biden

That the American Democrats still fail four years later to present an alternative to Joseph Robinette Biden Junior is a sign of failure for America’s largest party. In November, the unfortunate Americans could again be faced with the choice between the two political elders Trump (ahead of his party rivals in all polls) and Biden.

Biden’s track record is impressive: inflation brought America under control, courageously led the international alliance against the Kremlin warlords, and pulled the right levers to restore the country’s ailing infrastructure.

Nevertheless, Biden is already the oldest US president in history. He would be 86 at the end of his second term. According to a recent survey, Biden is two-thirds of the United States too old to hold the most powerful office in the world. Even worse for him: more than half of his own party thinks the Democrat should no longer run.

While Obama tours, the Democrats slumber on

The Delaware man can’t hide his age, although his doctor only confirmed in February that he was fit. He hardly ever gives interviews, regularly trips over his own feet and often looks confused. He recently ended a performance in Ireland, the land of his ancestors, with the words: “Let’s lick the world!” (“Let’s lick the world”). What he meant by that: Even his staff of professional smooth talkers couldn’t answer that.

With today’s announcement, Biden’s 2020 promise that he was merely a “bridge” for future Democratic leaders will be shattered definitively. His vice president Kamala Harris, 58, who was pale-looking as the first woman in a senior position, doesn’t have what it takes for what’s considered the toughest job in the world. Biden has yet to bridge the gap to see his party through the next campaign.

While Democratic superstar Barack Obama (61) chats in big stadiums in Zurich, Amsterdam and Berlin these days, the Democrats in the US are falling woefully short in their search for a new figurehead. Even Donald Trump’s renewed candidacy has not woken the party from its twilight state. Too bad: America, obsessed with heroes, more than deserves a fresh face at the top.
