Protest against wall building in France.

Street stickers are from yesterday. French activists have built a wall over a highway. The reason? To oppose an expansion of the highway. “Protesters have erected a brick wall on a national highway to prevent the construction of a new highway,” the activist camp said on Saturday. They complain that the planned expansion will destroy 2,500 trees and surrounding habitat.

Thousands had gathered on the stretch of road in the Tarn region, according to French media. According to the demonstrators, the expansion of the A69 motorway would pollute the environment, contribute to global warming and threaten biodiversity.

Cement and bricks arrived quickly. A wall appeared out of nowhere across the A69, to the cheers and chants of the demonstrators. There was no sign of police or security forces.

«Achronistic» project from the 90s

In addition to the wall’s ad hoc construction, environmentalists marched in the pouring rain along the planned highway that will connect the southern cities of Toulouse and Castres. The demonstrators carried banners with slogans such as “Less energy, fewer cars and less asphalt” and other green messages.

Green MEP Sandrine Rousseau (51) said the project dates back to the 1990s, when it was still thought that you could only travel by car and on highways. “There’s really no need for another highway.”

The construction would lead to the loss of agricultural land and threaten biodiversity, according to Green politician Julien Bayou (42). The planned new construction of 53 kilometers is “anachronistic”. (kes)
