The de facto president and commander-in-chief of the Sudanese army Abdel Fattah Burhan (63) has agreed to the evacuation of civilians and diplomatic representatives from the disputed country. An army spokesman said in a statement Saturday that the United States, Britain, France and China will begin evacuation by military transport aircraft from the capital Khartoum in the coming hours. Burhan has therefore promised to “facilitate and guarantee” the evacuation and to give the countries “the necessary support to ensure this”.
A Saudi Arabian delegation has already been evacuated from the eastern city of Port Sudan, the spokesman said. A Jordanian delegation should also be flown out of Port Sudan later on Saturday.
Burhan: “Let Daglo get away in the box”
The army is in control of all airports in the country except those in Khartoum and the city of Njala in the South Dafür region, Burhan told Al-Arabia live on Saudi television. He will remain in control of the army and will only escape in a coffin from his rival and former deputy Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, 47, the leader of the RSF, Burhan said.
The US embassy in Khartoum said on Saturday that the ongoing fighting and the closure of the capital’s airport make it impossible to evacuate US citizens at this time. They would continue to monitor the situation closely.
The situation is also “dangerous” for the Swiss.
There are also about 100 Swiss in Sudan. However, they could not be evacuated so far, as Serge Bavaud, head of the State Department’s Crisis Management Center (EDA), said in Bern on Friday. The Swiss are partly in the middle of the fighting taking place in the center of the capital Khartoum.
Now that should change according to “20 minutes”. “The FDFA is in contact with third countries and can, if necessary, cooperate in the rescue measures of other countries,” the newspaper said on Saturday. However, further details cannot be released for security reasons.
In Sudan, bloody fighting has been going on for a week between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah Burhan (63) and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Mohammed Hamdan Daglo (47). The Russian mercenary group Wagner is also said to be active there. (SDA/a/chs)
