A fire broke out in a restaurant in Madrid on Friday evening.

Two people died and ten were injured in a fire at restaurant Burro Canaglia in the Spanish capital Madrid. The fire broke out late Friday night at the restaurant’s only exit and quickly spread, the fire department said.

Some guests fled to the back of the restaurant from where they could not escape. Because the nearest fire station was only a few meters away, the fire in Plaza Manuel Becerra was quickly extinguished and the trapped people were freed, a spokesman for the fire department said. For two people, however, all help came too late.

While flambéing, set plastic flowers on fire

An eyewitness told the newspaper “El País” that a waiter accidentally set fire to plastic flowers used to decorate the ceiling and some walls of the restaurant while flambéing a dish. The flames spread very quickly and the acrid smoke made it impossible to even breathe on the street in front of the restaurant, according to another witness.

On the website, the restaurant advertises Italian cuisine with a difference: pizza is flambéed, other dishes are served with incense. They describe themselves as a “rogue kitchen”. (SDA)
