“NATO apparently continues to flood Ukraine and involve the alliance,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday, according to the Interfax news agency. In view of the invasion of the neighboring country ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Peskov said: “All this shows once again to anyone who has at least some intellectual ability that the President’s decision to carry out this operation start was correct.”

During a surprise visit on Thursday, Stoltenberg promised Ukraine further support in its efforts to join the military alliance. “Ukraine has a place in NATO,” said the 64-year-old in Kiev. With the support of NATO, it will eventually be able to take over. Later, at the US military base in Ramstein, he spoke out in favor of continuing talks on the transfer of Western fighter jets to Ukraine.

Russia has been at war with Ukraine since February 24, 2022. One of the Kremlin’s official war goals is to prevent its neighbor from joining NATO – even though, as a sovereign state, it has the fundamental right to freely choose an alliance. Nevertheless, before the start of the Russian invasion, Ukraine’s accession was by no means imminent. On the other hand, Stoltenberg has repeatedly indirectly ruled out early accession in the middle of the war.
