After choreographer Marco Goecke’s dog feces attacked a critic, the State Opera in Hanover, Germany, has a new ballet director. Goecke’s previous deputy, Christian Blossfeld, took over the running of the company in Hanover.
Artistic director Laura Berman said Thursday that he is no longer just acting ballet director. Her contract runs until 2029 and “we’re in it together,” Berman said, referring to Blossfeld’s contract length.
He emphasized that his predecessor’s pieces formed the basis of the repertoire. Berman called Goecke “one of the most important choreographers of our time”. In the new season 2023/2024, the theater will also play plays by Goecke.
In February, Goecke smeared a critic with dog faeces in the foyer of the opera. He had previously accused the journalist of always writing “bad, personal” reviews. The Staatstheater Hannover bade farewell to him in the week following the attack and his contract as a ballet director was terminated with immediate effect and by mutual consent. Blossfeld then took over provisional leadership. (oee/sda/dpa)
