The public prosecutor in Rennes, Brittany, announced on Tuesday that the shop owner was in the basement of her store on Saturday during the protests when she heard noises. She went upstairs and found three broken windows.
When she opened the door to assess the damage, “two people forced their way into the store,” prosecutor Philippe Astruc said. One of the thieves stole gold coins and bars while the second held the shopkeeper.
Despite months of protests, French President Emmanuel Macron raised the retirement age from 62 to 64 on Saturday night. Protests broke out again on Saturday, involving more than a thousand people in Rennes alone. There were also clashes between protesters and police.
Mayor Nathalie Appéré said Rennes city center was “looted” during the clashes. (sda/afp)
