Fox News has now paid $787.5 million to voting machine company Dominion over voter fraud allegations in the 2020 presidential election.

The right-wing US news channel Fox News has paid voting machine company Dominion more than $787 million in damages in a libel suit over voter fraud allegations. Dominion attorney Justin Nelson said Tuesday outside a courthouse in Wilmington, Delaware, that the settlement reached was worth $787.5 million.

“The truth is important. Lying has consequences,” Nelson said. Shortly before, the responsible judge had announced the agreement between the warring parties.

For example, Fox News literally avoided a civil lawsuit at the last minute in the dispute over false allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election. The broadcaster, which belongs to the controversial media mogul Rupert Murdoch (92), said in a statement that it was “satisfied” with the settlement reached.

Dominion originally sought about $1.6 billion (about €1.5 billion) in damages in the lawsuit because Fox News had spread reports of alleged manipulation of the voting machines. The broadcaster’s management referred to freedom of the press and insisted that the statements of then US President Donald Trump (76) and his lawyers were legitimately presented as news. Dominion, on the other hand, wanted to prove that Fox News was deliberately broadcasting fake news. (SDA/AFP)
