The prosecutor in the case claims that “there was a racial component to the case” of the perpetrator of the crime, who faces a possible life sentence
On Monday, the authorities of Kansas City (Missouri, USA) filed criminal charges against an 85-year-old man who shot a 16-year-old African-American boy in the head and arm that he went to the wrong house when he was picking up his two younger brothers, Efe reported.
Andrew D. Lester was charged with two counts of fatally wounding 16-year-old Ralph Yarl with a firearm last Thursday, an act that sparked protests and outrage from several artists, including Jennifer Houston, Leslie Jones, Halle Berry and Justin Timberlake.
Prosecutor Zachary Thompson charged Lester with first-degree assault and armed criminal action on Monday. He specified that “there was a racial component in the case of Lester,” who faces life in prison if convicted on the first charge.. Ben Crump, an attorney hired by the family, said Yarl went to look for his younger siblings and knocked on the door of the wrong house when the resident fired a gunshot.
Missouri is one of the states in the country with a controversial “defense of your space” law, which it allows those who feel threatened to defend their life or property without retreat. The prosecutor specified that there was a warrant for Lester’s arrest and that bail was set at $200,000.
Lester was held for 24 hours, the maximum for a felony suspect pending indictment, and then released last Friday. Police Chief Stacey Graves said the gun was seized as evidence.adding that his detectives are “working as quickly and carefully as possible” to ensure a solid foundation for any prosecution.
