She does not want to cut economic and political ties, von der Leyen said in Strasbourg on Tuesday. “However, there is an urgent need for a new balance in our relationships based on transparency, predictability and reciprocity.”
Therefore, economic risks must be reduced. In key areas such as the energy and health sectors, but also in its own defence, Europe needs to become more resilient.
“With our existing trade defense tools, we have given ourselves the right tools to address security concerns and economic disruptions. So we need to use them with more confidence when we need them,” von der Leyen said.
At the same time, however, new possibilities must be developed. Specifically, according to her information, it is being investigated whether there is a need for a new control instrument for European foreign investments in the field of sensitive technologies.
Regarding the conflict in Taiwan, she said: “We strongly reject any unilateral change to the status quo, especially through the use of force.” She did not comment on French President Emmanuel Macron’s controversial statements, according to which Europe should keep an equal distance from China and the US on the Taiwan issue.
