According to human rights activists: At least 36 killed in IS attack in Syria

At least 36 people have been killed in an attack by the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) in Syria, human rights activists say. Armed IS fighters attacked people while searching for truffles near the western city of Hama, the Syrian Observatory said on Sunday. Among the victims are 19 civilians and 17 members of a pro-government militia. The activists and the Syrian state news agency Sana initially reported 26 dead. It was initially unclear if there were any injuries.

In the country of the civil war, truffle hunters are repeatedly victims of violence. Supporters of IS regularly kill and kidnap people who want to make money collecting the valuable delicacy in the impoverished civil war country. The search also leads to remote desert areas, which serve as a haven for extremists and are often mined.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, five shepherds were killed on Sunday in a new attack by IS in the Dair al-Saur province in the east of the country. The armed terrorists kidnapped two more.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, IS supporters have killed more than 100 civilians in Syria alone this year.

Years ago, IS controlled large areas in Syria and neighboring Iraq. The terrorists there have now been defeated militarily. But they keep attacking. (sda/dpa)
