Berset visits Swiss UN troops in Congo

At the end of his visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), President Alain Berset met Swiss troops of the UN peacekeeping mission Monusco. From Switzerland’s point of view, this plays a key role in stabilizing the situation in the country.

The Federal Public Service Home Affairs (EDI) announced this on Sunday. Earlier, Berset met Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi in the capital Kinshasa. The conversation was about bilateral relations and the security situation in the east of the country.

Berset also visited a camp for internally displaced persons in Goma. In Bukava, the Federal President also met representatives of regional authorities and Swiss partner organizations, as well as Nobel Prize winner Denis Mukwege at his Panzi Hospital.

According to the FDHA, all discussions focused on how to ensure the protection of civilians in conflict zones. A meeting of the UN Security Council chaired by Berset is scheduled for mid-May on this subject. (sda)
