Former President Bolsonaro will testify before the Brazilian federal police for the next ten days.

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro (68) was due to be questioned about the storming by supporters of the government district in the capital Brasília earlier this year. The Supreme Court ordered the federal police to record the testimony of the right-wing populist politician within ten days at the request of the Attorney General’s Office. The exact date is not yet known.

Angry Bolsonaro supporters stormed the government district a few days after his successor President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 77, took office on New Year’s Day. They briefly seized control of Congress, the seat of government, and the Supreme Court. They rioted in offices and boardrooms, leaving a trail of destruction. It took security forces hours to regain control of the situation.

Bolsonaro opponents blame him

The new government and many Brazilians hold Bolsonaro personally responsible for the riots. He had repeatedly questioned the electoral system and never explicitly admitted his loss to Lula.

Radical supporters then blocked roads and called on the armed forces to stage a coup. During the storming of the government district, the ex-president was in the US. (SDA)
