The patrol car was waiting on the hard shoulder of the A64 near Trier at a bridge on Thursday evening for a heavy transport, the police in Trier announced on Friday.
The officials must block the oncoming lane for the crossing. At the same time, a truck driver wanted to fix technical problems with the brakes about two kilometers away in the same direction as the officials on the hard shoulder. When he got out to check on the vehicle, it started moving.
The truck rolled downhill about two kilometers without a driver and accelerated. During the journey, the vehicle hit the left and right guardrails several times. At the bridge he collided with the patrol car.
The driver was injured when he jumped from the moving truck. The injuries prevented the two officers from working temporarily. Damage was caused to both vehicles.
The public prosecutor has ordered a technical assessment of the truck. The A64 was closed to one lane for several hours to record the accident and prepare the report.
