Trump arrives in New York for questioning about business practices

Former US President Donald Trump has arrived in New York for questioning about his business practices. According to TV footage, the 76-year-old’s motorcade reached Attorney General Letitia James’ office in Manhattan on Thursday. It is Trump’s first visit to New York following his criminal charges last week in connection with paying a porn star hush money.

In this case, New York Attorney General Letitia James Trump had only sued civilly. She accuses him, the company named after him and his three children Donald Junior, Eric and Ivanka of having shown larger or smaller assets as needed, for example to gain easier access to loans or to pay less tax.

With the case, which is scheduled to go to trial in October, James wants the Trumps to pay $250 million in damages. Trump’s company denies the allegations. In a previous interrogation under oath last year, Trump refused to testify hundreds of times for hours — except for his name.

The focus of the 76-year-old’s examination scheduled for Thursday was initially unclear. Some opponents and supporters of the former US president had gathered in front of the attorney general’s office. The mood in the US over Trump’s legal prosecution is heated. He is being investigated for a number of possible crimes. Trump himself dismisses all matters as politically motivated actions to prevent him from running for president in 2024. Trump applied for it months ago.

Last week, Trump became the first former US president to face criminal charges. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg accused him of increasing his chances in the 2016 presidential election by paying hush money to two women, violating election laws. He tried to disguise the payments with false entries in business documents. (sda/dpa)
