Nine people were killed in an attack by a group of armed men on a fishing port in northwestern Ecuador on Tuesday. Seven bodies were found in a fishing port in Esmeraldas district, and two more in a nearby health center, prosecutors said.
The 30 or so attackers came to the port in boats and cars and opened fire on the fishermen, killing nine, Interior Minister Juan Zapata said.
The incident happened in the morning (local time) when there were up to 2,000 people in the port on the Pacific coast, according to the interior minister. The assailants fired indiscriminately into the crowd, Zapata said. The region in northwestern Ecuador borders Colombia and is known for drug trafficking. (AFP)
