The Italian government has declared a nationwide state of emergency due to the recent high number of migrations via the Mediterranean route. It is valid for six months and should initially make five million euros available to the particularly affected regions in the south, the Ansa news agency reported on Tuesday.
The cabinet of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (46) confirmed the reports upon request. With the state of emergency, it should therefore be easier to set up new reception centers for refugees.
More than 31,000 migrants this year
In Italy, there has been talk for some time about the arrival of thousands of migrants. The Interior Ministry in Rome counted more than 31,000 people reaching Italy on boats this year – up from about 7,900 in the same period last year.
Many people try again and again from Tunisia and Libya via the Mediterranean Sea to reach the Italian islands of Lampedusa and Sicily, but also the Italian mainland or Malta with often unseaworthy boats. The extremely dangerous crossings sometimes lead to devastating boating accidents, such as at the end of February off the coast of Calabria with at least 90 deaths. (SDA)
