4 years in prison: Human rights activists demand release of Assange

Four years after the capture of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, Reporters Without Borders is calling on the US to withdraw its extradition request.

“We again call on the US government to close the case and allow the release without further delay,” Rebecca Vincent, the London representative of the Press Freedom Organization, told the German news agency. The April 11 anniversary of Assange’s imprisonment coincides with US President Joe Biden’s arrival in the UK.

The US accuses Assange of stealing and publishing secret materials from military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and endangering the lives of informants. Supporters see him as a courageous journalist who exposed war crimes.

The legal wrangling over the possible extradition of Assange to the United States has been dragging on for years. The British government has given the green light in principle for the extradition, but Assange and his supporters want to use other legal avenues to appeal.

Assange has been in prison for four long years, although he has not been convicted, Vincent criticized. “We are concerned for his safety and well-being in prison, where his physical and mental health remains at very high risk.”

The wife of Wikileaks founder Stella Assange has recently expressed concern about his condition. He is locked up for a maximum of 20 hours a day and visits are only possible to a very limited extent. (sda/dpa)
