US President Joe Biden has confirmed his general intention to run again in the next election in 2024. On the sidelines of an Easter event in the White House garden, Biden said in an interview with NBC on Monday that he plans to running again, but is not yet ready to officially announce it.
The Democrat repeats his language rules of recent months. The 80-year-old has said several times that he intends to run for re-election in the November 2024 presidential election. An official announcement has yet to be made. When that could come is unclear.
Biden made the comments Monday on the sidelines of the traditional Easter egg roll in the White House garden, to which hundreds of children are invited each year. The president and his wife Jill were there chatting about their Easter weekend.
Long tradition in the White House
On Monday, families gathered on the south lawn in front of the presidential residence in the blazing sun. Biden called Easter a time of hope, love and renewal. “Anything is possible in America,” said the 80-year-old on the south balcony of the White House, where he appeared with the First Lady — accompanied by two Easter bunnies.
Easter Egg Rolling was first held in the yard of the White House in 1878 under then-President Rutherford Hayes and has been an institution on the calendar of U.S. government headquarters ever since. It is a tradition of the event that children compete to roll hard-boiled eggs across the lawn with long spoons. There are also various other games and activities for younger visitors.
Easter eggs in the future
The reporter asked Biden how many more of these White House Easter events he wanted to do. “I plan on making at least three or four more Easter eggs,” Biden said. ‘Maybe five. Maybe six, who cares. I don’t know”said Biden with a smile. The reporter dug deeper and joked that he wanted to break news with a clear message about the 2024 election. “No, no, no,” Biden replied. He plans to return to running in 2024. “But we’re not ready to announce it yet.”
However, given his age, there are concerns even within Biden’s own party about whether he would be the best candidate. In the 2024 election, Biden would be 81 years old, 82 at the start of a second term and 86 at the end. (saw/sda/dpa)
