An elderly couple bought a puffer fish on the black market in Malaysia to eat. But the supposed party ended fatally, as “Malay Mail” reports.

Shortly after consumption, the two would have had the first signs of poisoning. Both had complained of a numb face and heart rhythm disturbances, the newspaper writes. The woman (83) became short of breath on the way to the emergency room and was pronounced dead the same day.

Eight days in a coma

The senior (84) would have bought the fish from a trader for five francs per kilo, his daughter (51) reports. He didn’t know the fish was poisonous. “My father awoke from his coma eight days after the incident. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated and he died on Saturday,” says the daughter.

At first, the survivor hoped that her father’s condition would improve. “I went to see him the night before he died and he looked fine. He was conscious and could talk to me as usual,” says the 51-year-old. “We really didn’t expect him to die the next day,” said the daughter.

Banned in Malaysia

The puffer fish is highly poisonous, but is considered a delicacy in Japan, for example. If you want to eat it, you must first remove the poisonous parts. The couple did not.

In Malaysia, where the two live, the sale and consumption of puffer fish is prohibited. (lia)
