Uber boss Dara Khosrowshahi, 53, got behind the wheel himself and started transporting people and groceries: he had trouble registering, was lured with tips and punished by the app for denying rides.
Under the alias Dave K. and with a gray Tesla Y, the Uber CEO was hired as a driver last September. He did this as part of a campaign to improve the quality of the driver service. In the months that followed, he made dozens of trips as a driver, transporting people around San Francisco. The head of the driver company describes his impressions to the “Wall Street Journal” (WSJ).
Desperate phone calls and extreme rush hour traffic
One night, while driving a client to the airport, he had to ignore frantic calls from his chief legal officer informing him that Uber’s network had been hacked. Another trip took him over a busy bridge. He vowed never to do that again after getting stuck in rush hour traffic on his way back to the city.
He had to deal with tipping off, fines for denied rides, and false information about the restaurants where he was going to pick up groceries. The main thing that surprised him negatively was the rude way his customers treated him. Those experiences deepened his compassion for his own drivers, Khosrowshahi told WSJ.
Uber boss underestimated the job of drivers
After the Corona crisis, customer demand returned to the usual level faster than the supply from drivers. As a result, Uber faced a labor shortage. It is essential to look closely at the drivers so that their loyalty to Uber does not decrease further. It is not enough to provide financial incentives alone. Khosrowshahi believes that when it comes to valuing its employees, the entire industry should go beyond its books.
