Amid tensions with Taiwan, China has announced military maneuvers near the island. The “combat preparation exercise” will take place from Saturday to Monday in the Taiwan Strait, north and south of the island and in the waters and airspace east of Taiwan, the Chinese military said. No further details have been given so far.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen (66) had just returned from a trip to the United States a few days earlier. On Wednesday (local time), she met with Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, 58, for talks. The California encounter was the first of its kind on American soil.

In protest at the rally, China imposed sanctions on U.S. organizers of events involving Tsai. Among others, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, where the meeting took place on Wednesday, was sanctioned.

The communist leadership in Beijing considers the democratically governed island of Taiwan part of the People’s Republic and threatens to conquer it. A visit to Taiwan by McCarthy’s predecessor Nancy Pelosi (83) in August led to a serious crisis. (SDA)
