14 suspects indicted after teacher’s murder in France

Two and a half years after the Islamist-motivated murder of teacher Samuel Paty in France, eight adults and six students have been charged. Two friends of the perpetrator shot dead by the police are charged with complicity in the murder of terrorists, the Paris anti-terror prosecutor announced on Friday. One of the two would have accompanied the perpetrator when buying the crime knife and the other on the way to the crime scene.

The black ribbon portrait of murdered teacher Samuel Paty will be displayed on the steps of the National Assembly in Paris on Tuesday, October 20, 2020. A memorial march will be held near Paris on Tuesday evening ...

The remaining adults are accused of forming a terrorist organization. Five students are accused of forming a criminal organization and one student made a false accusation that would have been the catalyst for the crime.

On October 16, 2020, 47-year-old history teacher Paty was murdered and then beheaded by an assailant in a Parisian suburb. The crime was classified as an Islamist-motivated act of terrorism and sparked international outrage. Security forces shot the perpetrator, an 18-year-old with Russian-Chechen roots. For the crime, the teacher was hounded on the internet for showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in a lesson on freedom of speech. (sda/dpa)
