In the bribery scandal in the European Parliament, the alleged mastermind Antonio Panzeri is allowed to leave prison under certain conditions. A spokesperson for the Brussels public prosecutor’s office said on Thursday that the competent court has ruled that Panzeri can spend his pre-trial detention under house arrest with electronic monitoring. Former Vice President Eva Kaili and Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella remain in prison.
In January, Panzeri signed an agreement with the prosecutor’s office in which he pledged to make an integral contribution to clearing up the scandal. The bribery scandal, which became public at the end of 2022, concerns the alleged influence of the governments of Qatar and Morocco on decisions of the EU parliament. The public prosecutor has charged the suspects with corruption, money laundering and membership of a criminal organization.
Kaili’s partner Francesco Giorgi was allowed to leave prison at the end of February under certain conditions. The Italian must continue his detention under house arrest with an electronic ankle bracelet. Due to possible involvement in the scandal, European parliamentarian Andrea Cozzolino is also under house arrest following a court decision in Naples. (sda/dpa)
