“Legal matters should not be used for election purposes,” Obrador told reporters on Wednesday (local time) — a day after Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 charges related to a hush money payment to a porn star.
He “didn’t agree with what they were doing to former President Trump,” Obrador said at his daily press conference, describing the allegations against Trump, who is seeking to run again next year, as a “hate campaign.”
This is the second time that the 69-year-old Obrador has defended Trump. On March 21, he criticized that charges could be brought against Trump with the aim of preventing him from running for president again.
The left-wing populist Obrador has maintained good relations with Trump, despite Trump describing Mexican migrants as “rapists” and drug dealers during the 2016 election campaign. (sda/afp)
