Florida’s Mark Mongiardo has been diagnosed with homebrewer’s disease. In the process, the body produces alcohol, which can make you drunk even if you don’t drink.

Mark Mongiardo, 40, a teacher from Florida, was suspected of coming to work drunk. Colleagues constantly smoke alcohol. He was confronted by his superiors and lost his job as a physical education teacher and later his home. He had to temporarily move in with his in-laws and sell his car.

Mongiardo was stopped twice by the police for driving under the influence, even though he had not consumed a drop of alcohol. They performed a breath alcohol test and found that the legal limit was exceeded.

“I Lost Everything”

The former teacher even had to answer to his wife. She no longer believed him and suspected him of secretly stealing beer. Mongiardo told ABC7 that there came a time when he couldn’t do it anymore. “I have lost everything a man can lose.”

Only: Mongiardo was not an alcoholic, but suffered from a rare disease. On the advice of his mother, the American went to the doctor. She had read on the internet that there is a disease in which the body produces alcohol. The responsible specialist carried out various examinations and indeed: Mongiardo was diagnosed with self-brewer syndrome.

Specifically, this means that an imbalance in the gut microbiome converts sugar into alcohol. The alcohol enters the bloodstream and the person appears drunk – even though he has not consumed any alcohol.

According to “ABC7,” Mongiardo takes 30 tablets a day to get the disease under control. In addition, he should not eat carbohydrates.

The disease is very rare and has not been well studied scientifically. It is not known how many people suffer from it. Researchers believe that in Mongiardo’s case, a long-term course of antibiotics caused the illness. (A)
