This is how Donald Trump (76) likes it: All the cameras are on him, he’s back in the spotlight. Although he has not chosen the time and place: Tuesday afternoon (local time) the former American president has to trot before the New York prosecutor’s office.
It mainly concerns the hush money payment from 2016 to porn actress Stormy Daniels (44). However, the charge is still under lock and key, so the exact charge is not yet known.
Impeachments could have a mobilizing effect on Trump supporters
For other politicians, a criminal procedure is an image damage that can end a political career. Trump, on the other hand, is trying to exploit the charge politically: he poses as the victim of a politically motivated “witch hunt” by Democratic President Joe Biden, 80, to prevent his return to the White House.
That seems to work at least partially, Louis Perron (46), political scientist and political advisor, explains to Blick. “He has a base of die-hard supporters. There may be a mobilization effect in between, which will also be visible in the polls in the short term.”
But Trump will not get very far with that support, Perron suspects. “The indictment reminds everyone else of the things they don’t like about Trump: the constant noise and chaos, the focus on him as a person.” The political scientist’s prognosis: “The indictment will reinforce the impression that Trump is over.”
In the long run, the affair harms politician Trump
A possible conviction by the prosecutor’s office, even if it is still a long way off, will complicate Trump’s presidential campaign, Perron said. Still, Trump must enter the ring as a presidential candidate. “He has to stay in the race. How else can he claim the allegations are a politically motivated witch hunt?” Without a candidacy, Trump is no longer a politician, but “just a private individual with legal problems.”
Does the victim role help to win? Peter doubts. In particular, so-called “swing voters,” ie Democrats or Republicans who are out of office, could be put off by the charges and trial. And: “It should also be remembered that the New York indictment is only the beginning of his legal troubles. There are many other processes going on.”
