The United States says it has killed a senior member of the Islamic State (IS) terror militia in Syria. The IS leader was killed on Monday in an attack in the northwest of the country.

The responsible regional command of the US army announced this on Tuesday morning. He would have been responsible for planning attacks in Europe and expanding the leadership team. According to US information, there were no civilian casualties in the operation.

According to the US, IS continues to pose a threat to the region and beyond and, while weakened, the group is still capable of attacking in the region. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the IS leader has been in Idlib province for 10 days.

The US military is deployed in Syria in areas controlled by the Kurdish militia YPG and its allies. The US armed forces there support their fight against IS, which had ruled large areas in Syria and neighboring Iraq. Despite the military victory over IS announced in 2019, its cells are still active in the country and carry out attacks. In 2022, IS claimed responsibility for about 280 attacks in Syria.
