The UTA trade union called for a strike on Monday, the bus drivers blocked roads and set fire to barricades. When the security minister of the province of Buenos Aires, Sergio Berni, tried to talk to the drivers, he was attacked and wounded in the face.
In the early hours of the morning, a 65-year-old bus driver was shot dead while on duty in the town of La Matanza. Criminals would have boarded the bus and robbed the passengers. Then, according to media reports, they got into a shootout with a police officer who happened to be on the bus. A suspect was subsequently arrested.
In view of the serious economic crisis in Argentina, the poor suburbs of Buenos Aires in particular have to contend with high crime rates. More than 13,000 robberies were recorded in the village of La Matanza alone last year. “Nobody protects us. One more kill and no one cares. I want justice for my colleague,” said a bus driver during the protests against La Nación newspaper. (sda/dpa)
