After the attack on a prominent military blogger, cleanup efforts are underway in St. Petersburg.

In its war against Ukraine, Russia has blamed leaders in Kiev for the murder of Kremlin-affiliated military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky in St. Petersburg. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov (55) spoke of a “terrorist attack” on Monday. Tatarski, 40, whose real name was Maxim Fomin and described by Ukrainian media as a “belligerent sadist”, was killed in an explosion at a cafe in central St Petersburg on Sunday. The assassination caused widespread horror in the Russian power apparatus.

Moscow state media also showed surveillance camera footage of the explosion at the cafe. More than 30 people were injured when the explosive exploded. Videos showed destroyed tables and chairs in the cafe and traces of blood. Parts of the facade also fell on the sidewalk and on the street in the broad daylight explosion in the residence of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin (70).

Investigators arrested a 26-year-old woman who presented Tatarski with a plaster bust at an event at the cafe. Tatarski, who himself had called for the “total destruction of Ukraine”, wanted to talk about his experiences as a war reporter in the battle zone in eastern Ukraine. In a video of the interrogation released by the Russian Interior Ministry, the woman admitted presenting the figure to Tatarski.

Navalny on trial for extremism

However, the suspect did not admit to murder plans, nor did she say from whom she received the arrest. According to Russian media, her husband said she was incapable of killing anyone. Nor did she leave the café after the gift was handed over. Rather, his wife assumed an insect was attached to the bust to listen to Tatarski. The investigation is continuing, according to authorities.

Kremlin spokesman Peskov long accused the “regime” in Kiev of organizing “terrorist attacks”. That is also why Russia has started its war against the country, he said. Russia’s anti-terrorism committee claimed that Ukrainian secret services used the now-arrested suspect for the “terrorist attack”. The woman would therefore have had ties to the anti-corruption foundation of the imprisoned Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny (46).

The media had previously reported that the alleged perpetrator had participated in demonstrations calling for Navalny’s release in the past and, like the leader of the opposition, was a staunch opponent of the war. Navalny’s team, working in exile, categorically denied the allegations of the Russian authorities. On the contrary, agents of the domestic secret service FSB were responsible for the murder of the propagandist, said opposition members Ivan Zhdanov and Leonid Volkov.

The power apparatus has been trying to trap the opposition with terror for years, Zhdanov said. Corresponding allegations from the Anti-Terrorism Committee are sensitive because Navalny will soon have to answer for a new criminal case for extremism. For the Russian investigators, the charge in the case of the explosion now comes in handy because Navalny can be sentenced to the maximum sentence for terrorism, Zhdanov said. He and Volkov accused the FSB of committing political assassinations for years.

Prigozhin praises bloggers as true patriots

The FSB itself “turned off” this blogger, who also criticized the defense ministry’s warfare in Moscow, Zhdanov said. Tatarski had even testified to the systemic flaws of the military and made suggestions for improving warfare. To the chagrin of the powerful security apparatus, the influential military bloggers repeatedly criticize corruption and abuse of office in the state leadership.

The head of Wagner’s private army, Yevgeny Prigozhin, owner of the cafe where Tatarsky died, had repeatedly denounced these abuses. Prigozhin praised the blogger as a true patriot and showed up with a Russian flag with Tatarsky’s name on it. The Wagner boss also contradicted the Kremlin’s version and sees more of a group of radical opponents of the war behind the attack. “I would not blame the Kiev regime for these actions,” he said.

In Kiev, Presidential Office adviser Mykhailo Podoliak, like Navalny’s team, saw the attack more as a sign of power struggle in Russia. Even “spiders” would eat each other in a barrel, he said.

Navalny’s Zhdanov said that the agents “poison and kill each other, divide their territories. These things are just not all public”. Now the secret service agents wanted to attach something to Navalny’s anti-corruption foundation. need the form of Ukraine, but also an internal enemy in the form of the Navalny team,” said Zhdanov.

His colleague Volkov said that otherwise the “almighty agents of the secret service” would have the situation under control, but now they had allowed such a thing to happen in the center of St. Petersburg – that speaks for the FSB as responsible. It is the second case in which a Russian propagandist has been killed since the Russian offensive war began more than a year ago. Publicist Darja Dugina was killed in a car explosion near Moscow last year. (SDA)
