In the small town of Belvidere, Illinois, a severe storm caused the roof of a theater to collapse, killing at least one person. Dozens of other concertgoers were injured, American media report Friday evening (local time). According to Belvidere Fire Chief Shawn Schadle, 5 people were taken to hospital with serious, 18 with moderate and 5 with minor injuries. At the time of the collapse, a storm had reached speeds of about 145 kilometers per hour.

According to authorities, there were 260 people in the theater when the roof collapsed. Dozens of ambulances are present.
The concert was sold out, the newspaper said. Death metal bands Morbid Angel, Revocation and Skeletal Remains were on the program at the Apollo Theater. Morbid Angel said on Facebook that the concert was canceled “because of a tornado that hit the venue”. The post also states that the band has camouflaged on the spot and hopes that everyone who attended the concert is safe and can go home.
Belvidere has about 25,000 inhabitants and is located more than 100 kilometers from Chicago. (saw/sda/dpa)
