EU boss Ursula von der Leyen (64) would be in the race for the post of NATO boss. This is evident from a report by the British “Sun” that quotes a diplomatic source. A number of NATO member states have therefore proposed that von der Leyen take over the alliance in October.
Acting NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg (64) is expected to end his term of office in October as planned. In all, he held the office for nearly nine years – his term of office was renewed three times.
British Defense Minister and Spanish Prime Minister are also possible
As the paper goes on to report, Britain is likely to veto former German Defense Minister von der Leyen. The British sources, to which The Sun refers, would attribute this to von der Leyen’s poor record as head of the German armed forces.
The “Welt am Sonntag” would also include Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez (51) and British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace (52) among the main candidates to succeed Stoltenberg. (dzc)
