The charges filed against former President Donald Trump (76) on Thursday are doing the rounds. Never before in US history has a former president been charged with a criminal offense.
After expressing anger at the latest events, Republicans are now trying to use the impeachment to their advantage. They say the charges against Trump set a precedent that would allow Republican prosecutors to file criminal charges against incumbent President Joe Biden, 80. That’s what conservative lawyers say to “The New York Post” (NYP) on Friday.
“A grand jury can indict a ham sandwich”
“You can bet there are prosecutors in Florida and Texas right now looking into state laws that include the Biden family,” Tom Fitton, 54, president of the conservative legal group Judicial Watch, told the paper. And: “And if they don’t, then they’re not doing their job.”
Expert Mike Davis, a former senior counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee, takes a similar view. It cannot be the case that an incident from seven years ago can be turned into a criminal offense. So Republican prosecutors should get creative now.
In addition, only “reasonable suspicion” is required for a grand jury indictment. “A grand jury can also indict a ham sandwich,” Davis said. You just saw that in New York. The Bidens, on the other hand, committed real crimes. “There is solid evidence that the Bidens were corruptly and illegally on the payroll of Chinese and Ukrainian oligarchs,” the expert told the NYP.
In the case, leaked computer files of Joe Biden’s son, Hunter (53), were at the forefront. His affairs in Ukraine raised questions: Hunter Biden, who held a position on the supervisory board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma between 2014 and 2019, was alleged to have deliberately influenced Ukrainian business people, as the leaked emails would indicate. In addition, the lawyer would have had difficulty explaining himself because of a video showing sex and drug use.
Tax fraud, illegal lobbying, money laundering
The U.S. law firm in Delaware is also reportedly investigating possible tax fraud, illegal foreign lobbying, money laundering and lying about his drug use to Hunter Biden.
Joe Biden himself does not have a clean slate. He also ran into trouble earlier this year when secret documents were found in his private quarters. The documents date from the time when Biden was vice president under Barack Obama (61).
Whether Republicans will actually try to take Biden to court remains to be seen. One thing is clear: now it is rumored that an ex-president can actually be impeached. One or the other must feel their chance to shoot out their opponents and get themselves into position. (dzc)
