Former US President Donald Trump (76) threatened “death and destruction” a few days ago if he was charged. In another post on his social media platform Truth Social, he was seen in a photo montage with a baseball bat next to investigating officer Alvin Bragg (49).
But that’s not all: as before the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, he again called for protests. Are his supporters now blowing up another forced march?
After these threats, the security authorities in New York even tightened the measures. However, large-scale protests are not expected. When Trump made the threat, there was only a small demonstration outside the district attorney’s office. Only a handful of supporters gathered at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
Trump fans are quieting down
“Today, the security forces are more aware and better armed,” US expert Claudia Brühwiler (41) told Blick. If there are riots because of the indictment, it is almost never in the Capitol, but at the place of the trial, which is New York. There are no signs of civil war at all. “These fears are clearly exaggerated,” says Brühwiler.
In general, extreme Trump fans seem calmed down. For example, QAnon influencer The Patriot Voice said wearing MAGA hats is the most effective means of protest. QAnon is a group of right-wing conspiracy theorists, the abbreviation “MAGA” standing for Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again”.
Right-wing extremist Ali Alexander, one of the organizers of the “Stop the Steal” rallies to protest the alleged election fraud, said: “In the past I would have said 100,000 patriots should block all access roads to Mar-a-Lago if Trump is arrested or has to go to court. I am now retired.” And on his Telegram channel he added: “But I will pray for him.”
Americans want optimists
The Washington Post commentator is also not afraid of a new uproar. The end of the world is not a political message to be well received. Americans tended to choose the candidate who presented the most optimistic option for the future. As examples he cites Ronald Reagan’s (1911-2004) “Tomorrow in America”, Bill Clinton’s (76) Place of Hope and Barack Obama’s (61) “Hope and Change”.
Donald Trump is the first former president in US history to face criminal charges. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office announced charges Thursday night against the Republican, who is running for president again. It concerns hush money payments of $ 130,000 to porn actress Stormy Daniels (44). Trump spoke of “political persecution and electoral interference”.
