The Roman children’s hospital Bambino Gesù recently performed a complex operation on a ten-month-old girl. A two kilogram tumor was removed from the child’s liver.
The Vatican hospital said the operation took six hours. The baby, who weighed eight kilograms at the time of the procedure, is doing well and is starting to grow normally again.
The girl is now twelve months old and is feeding without any problems. The operation was performed by the team led by Professor Marco Spada, head of the Department of Liver and Pancreatic Surgery at the Children’s Hospital.
The concerned parents had taken the child to Bambino Gesù’s emergency room. Compared to his twin brother, he showed a swollen abdomen and lack of appetite. The ultrasound examination, which was performed immediately, showed a large lesion with fluid content in the liver. The child underwent an examination and it was confirmed that it was a liver tumor with a diameter of more than 13 centimeters, completely occupying the right and central part of the organ. (sda/apa)
