Kiev cannot count on victory against a nuclear power like Russia, the 68-year-old said Friday in a speech to the nation in Minsk before hundreds of officials and guests. “There is now a lot of information about an upcoming counter-offensive. That is the worst that can happen,” Lukashenko warned. This would destroy any chance of a peaceful solution.
From Lukashenko’s point of view, the fighting must cease immediately. The troops must remain in their current positions, without further arms transfers from the West to Ukraine. It was the last chance for an escalation. Lukashenko said that Russia’s defense industry is gaining momentum. Ukraine will be destroyed after the industry runs at full speed.
The demand is reminiscent of Moscow’s latest threats. Lukashenko is considered to be politically, economically and militarily heavily dependent on the Kremlin. Lukashenko called Kiev’s terms for talks, including the withdrawal of Russian troops from the occupied territory of Ukraine, “ridiculous”. Belarus gives up its military bases to Russian attacks on Ukraine. Russia now also wants to station tactical nuclear weapons there.
