Ahmet Horum (49) is deeply saddened. “I lost seven family members in the February 6, 2023 earthquake in Turkey. Cousins, aunts and uncles, »says the owner of Pizza Mia in Strengelbach AG to Blick. In addition, the family home in Küpeli Kiz Köyü village was completely destroyed. “It’s really bad,” says Horum. To this day, hardly any help comes to his native village.
Horum grew up in Küpeli Kiz Köyü before coming to Switzerland in 1992 and opening his shop 21 years ago. That is why he is now taking action: “Because the people there definitely need a lot more living containers to at least have a roof over their heads, I am taking a special action.” Means: The Turk and his team want to offer a takeaway pizza “Maras” from April 4 to 6, 2023 – for ten francs each.
“This can’t be it!”
He chose the name Maras because thousands of people died there. “The entire proceeds of the special donation pizza of your choice will then be donated in full to my home village, which is close to Maras,” says Horum, who is married with two children. “Luckily me, my family, my parents and siblings were in Switzerland at the time of the earthquake. If it had happened in the summer, we would have been there on holiday as usual.”
Many of his relatives are still in the earthquake zone. “A cousin of mine was already in a wheelchair before the earthquake and has now also lost his house and all his belongings,” says Horum. “Now he lives on the street, so to speak. This can’t be it!”
It is not the first time that Horum has attracted attention with a special campaign. Already in 2014 he made a pizza Endstazioni. There was a pizza dispute at the border and German couriers were only allowed to deliver to Switzerland “with annoying bureaucracy”. At that time, Horum sold the Pizza Endstazioni at prices as in Germany. “In solidarity”, as he said at the time. Now he wants to show his heart again: “With the Pizza Maras!”
