Alvin Bragg is remembered as the first US attorney to indict a former president. This should bring Manhattan’s first black chief prosecutor international fame. As an opponent of former president Donald Trump and therefore as an enemy of the right in America.
Despite his membership in the Democratic Party, the 49-year-old is not too interested in political intrigue. Growing up in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan in the 1980s, Bragg experienced crime himself: “Before I was 21 years old, I had a gun pointed at me six times: three times by police officers and three times by non-cop.”
Moreover, Alvin Bragg went on to say that in his youth he had a knife in his neck, a semi-automatic weapon on his head and a murder victim on his doorstep.
After taking office as public prosecutor in January 2022, the family man initially came under internal pressure because he wanted to devote more resources to the prosecution of serious violent crimes and less to drug or prostitution-related crimes.
The chief prosecutor had also been criticized for being too hesitant about Donald Trump, failing to prosecute investigations related to the current case. Alvin Bragg only explained this in one of his few TV interviews:
Trump’s impeachment apparently cleared that hurdle Friday night — likely marking a political firestorm for Alvin Bragg personally and his associates.
Meanwhile, the right is already donning Bragg as a Democrat looking to get rid of presidential candidate Trump before the 2024 election. Indirect campaign support for Alvin Bragg by conservative-hated American investor and philanthropist George Soros gives them extra ammunition. Donald Trump himself had previously called Prosecutor Bragg a “racist”. (chmedia/dpa/sat)
