At least four police officers have been killed in an attack by the Pakistani Taliban in Pakistan. Six others were injured, local police said Thursday.

According to police officer Mohamed Ishfaq, Taliban fighters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province first stormed a police checkpoint at gunpoint on Thursday evening and then attacked a security authorities vehicle with a bomb on the side of the road. The Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

A few days earlier, the militant Islamists had also killed a senior Pakistani secret service official in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In general, the security situation in the South Asian country has deteriorated. After the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), which is independent of the Islamist Taliban government in Afghanistan, declared a peace treaty with the government in Islamabad terminated late last year, militant Islamists have already carried out several attacks.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on the Afghan border is considered a stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban. In January this year, an attack in the provincial capital of Peshawar killed at least 84 people, most of them police officers. (sda/dpa)
