“Israel was, is and always will be a proud, strong and vibrant democracy, a beacon of freedom and shared prosperity in the heart of the Middle East,” Netanyahu assured in a video address on Wednesday at a virtual democracy hosted by US President Joe Biden – Top. He believes that in the midst of this debate, Israel has a “historic opportunity” to strengthen democracy and restore a “right balance” between the three branches of the state. This is the only way to protect the rights of the individual and the majority.

On relations with the United States, Netanyahu said, “Israel and the United States have had occasional disagreements.” But the alliance between the two countries is “unshakable”. Biden put a damper on the prospect of Netanyahu visiting Washington on Tuesday. When asked if he would invite Netanyahu to the White House, Biden told reporters, “Not anytime soon.” Netanyahu responded on Twitter that he appreciated Biden’s support. But Israel is a sovereign country that does not make decisions under pressure from abroad, “not even from best friends”.

With the judicial reform, Netanyahu’s coalition wants to limit the influence of the Supreme Court and increase the government’s position of power. She accuses the Supreme Court of excessive interference in political decisions. In the future, for example, parliament must be able to overturn decisions by the Supreme Court with a simple majority. Critics see the separation of powers in danger and warn of a state crisis if the reform is implemented in this way.
