The 37-year-old was elected on Tuesday afternoon by a majority of 71 votes from the SNP and the Greens as Scotland’s first ethnic minority “first minister”. Yousaf’s family has Pakistani roots.

The former health minister was elected as the new party leader by members of his party after longtime Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced her resignation. Confirmation by parliament was considered a formality. Yousaf will be sworn in on Wednesday.

Sturgeon signed her letter of resignation on Tuesday and left the Scottish government seat of Bute House for the last time, she announced on Twitter. “Thanks Scotland for the privilege,” she wrote.

The 52-year-old is stepping down at his own request after more than eight years at the head of the Scottish government. It was considered popular until recently, but failed to achieve its greatest goal: the independence of the northernmost part of Great Britain from the United Kingdom. (saw/sda/dpa)
