Russian military authorities are rumored to have fired the commander of Russia’s Eastern Military District, Rustam Muradov, on Monday. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), among others, reports on the previously unconfirmed rumors and quotes several Russian military bloggers.

Muradov was appointed commander of the eastern military district on October 6, 2022, having previously served as deputy commander of the southern military district. Over the past five months, he has led “a series of catastrophic offensive operations” in the Donetsk region, the ISW explained. Muradov is also said to be responsible for Russia’s massive losses in trying to capture Wuhledar in southeastern Ukraine. Read more about the Russian debacle at Wuhledar here.

Putin promoted Muradov despite losing in February

Despite these losses and the lack of Russian successes around Wuhledar, Putin still promoted Muradov to the rank of Supreme General on February 20 for the “successes” of the 155th Marine Brigade in Wuhledar. This was announced at the time by the Russian Ministry of Defense.

A dismissal of Muradov could now be an admission of the lack of Russian successes. In addition to Muradov, the commander of the Western Military District, Yevgeny Nikiforov, was also reportedly fired. However, there is currently no official confirmation of the rumours.
