In 2021, the lowest number of abortions recorded since the start of statistics was 94,600, as the Federal Bureau of Statistics announced on Monday.
The number of reported abortions in 2022 was also above the level of the years 2014 through 2020, when the number was always between 99,000 and 101,000. The number was last higher than in 2022 and in 2012 with 106,800 cases. A clear reason for the sharp increase in 2022 cannot be deduced from the data, according to the ministry.
According to the current legal situation, an abortion is not punishable in Germany if it is carried out in the first three months after conception after mandatory conflict counselling. There are also no legal consequences if there are medical reasons for the termination or if the woman has been raped.
